Online School for Student Athletes and Busy Schedules

Online School for Student Athletes and Busy Schedules

If your child is a competitive athlete or your family's schedule simply doesn't fit a traditional school day, fitting in real academics without burning everyone out is a genuine problem. Novatio is a Cognia-accredited virtual private school for grades 2–8 that completes core academics in the morning, freeing the afternoon for training, competitions, creative work or anything else your family needs.

Novatio is designed so students finish their assigned academic work during the school day. There's no homework, which means evenings and travel days stay open. That's not a marketing line; it's how the model is built.

Why does a traditional school schedule fail busy students?

Traditional schools run on a fixed bell schedule built around an average student's availability. For a student who trains six days a week, travels for competitions or has significant family commitments, that schedule creates a near-constant conflict between doing school and doing the thing they're working toward.

The result is usually a choice between cutting back on the activity or falling behind academically. Neither is a great option, and neither reflects what the student is actually capable of.

How does Novatio's schedule actually work?

Students complete approximately two hours of focused, personalized core academics each morning. The five core subjects are Language, Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. All students follow a shared subject schedule, meaning everyone is working on math during the math block, but each student works at their own level within that subject.

Academics are designed to be done by lunch. That's the goal the model is built around, and it's what makes the schedule genuinely compatible with afternoon training, appointments or travel.

In the afternoon, students participate in live clubs focused on practical skills, creativity and real projects. Club sessions rotate roughly every nine to eleven weeks. Examples of the kinds of clubs Novatio has offered include financial literacy simulations, coding and game design, research and debate, and personal well-being goal-setting. Not every club is available every session.

What does personalized mean in practice?

Personalization at Novatio means each student works at the level they're actually at in each subject, not the level assigned by their birth year. A student can work at a more advanced level in math while receiving additional support in reading, or vice versa. The two subjects are tracked separately.

AI works behind the scenes to build each student's academic plan using real-time assessment data. It helps place students at the appropriate level, adjusts their learning path as they progress and flags where a teacher may need to step in. Students don't interact with an AI chatbot during academics. Instruction comes through high-quality video lessons and adaptive learning platforms.

Certified teachers provide the direct guidance, intervention and human support students need throughout the school day. When a student gets stuck, a teacher is available. Your child isn't left alone to figure out a program on their own. You can read more about how this works on the Novatio curriculum page.

Is there any homework?

No homework. Ever. Novatio is designed so students complete their assigned academic work during the school day rather than carrying a second school day into the evening. For a student athlete who finishes practice at 7 p.m., that distinction matters a great deal.

What do the academic results look like?

NWEA MAP data from Novatio's first cohort showed that students learned 4.6 times faster than expected during the measured period. That is a first-cohort result, not a guarantee, and individual results vary. The academic model is also designed around the goal of helping students learn twice as much in approximately two focused hours, though the 4.6x figure is the measured outcome from that early cohort.

One Novatio student moved from the 8th to the 80th percentile in reading over one year, based on NWEA MAP scores. That's one student's experience and not a typical or guaranteed result, but it shows what's possible when a student's learning plan is actually matched to where they are.

Does Novatio work for students with learning differences?

Many student athletes with ADHD or other learning differences do well in this model because the structure works with how they're wired rather than against it. Short, focused session blocks, frequent breaks and individual pacing are built into the daily model rather than added only after a student begins to struggle.

For students with an IEP or 504, Novatio offers an optional Special Education Support Program that may include case management, targeted academic support and one-on-one specialist-led intervention depending on the student's needs. Additional support services carry an additional cost, though for students with an IEP or 504, those additional costs are covered by the state. You can find more detail on the special education support page.

What should families know before enrolling?

Novatio serves grades 2–8, so it isn't the right fit for high school students. The virtual model works best when a student has a reasonably consistent place to do their morning academics, even if that's a hotel room or a team facility on travel days. Families should also be comfortable with a virtual school day rather than an in-person one.

Novatio has no academic entry requirements. All applicants are accepted regardless of grades, test scores or prior academic history. Admission to Novatio and approval for state funding, where applicable, are separate processes.

If you're unsure whether the model is the right fit for your child's specific situation, an admissions call is the fastest way to get a straight answer. Book a 1:1 call with Karissa to talk through your family's schedule, your child's needs and whether Novatio makes sense. The admissions page has everything you need to get started.
