Novatio School is a Cognia-accredited, private virtual school for students in grades 2 through 8. It combines personalized, mastery-based academics with direct support from certified teachers and live afternoon clubs. For Texas families whose child has ADHD, the school's structure may be a better fit than a traditional classroom, and TEFA funding can make it financially accessible for families who qualify.

Why does a traditional classroom feel so hard for students with ADHD?

A traditional classroom asks students to sit still, follow a shared pace and shift between subjects on a schedule that was built for an average student. For a child with ADHD, that environment creates constant friction. Attention flags during long blocks. The pace is either too slow or too fast to stay engaged. Corrections pile up in front of classmates. Over time, the daily friction can start to look like a behavior problem or an academic one, when the real issue is often a mismatch between the student's needs and the classroom's structure. Many parents describe watching a capable child gradually stop trying.

How is Novatio structured differently for students with ADHD?

At Novatio, students complete approximately two focused hours of personalized core academics each morning, working through short, targeted sessions in language, reading, math, social studies and science. The structure is predictable but not rigid. Students work at their own level within each subject, so the work stays appropriately challenging rather than frustrating or repetitive. Many of the supports that students with ADHD often need as add-ons in traditional schools, including individual pacing, frequent breaks, movement breaks and short focused session blocks, are built into Novatio's daily model rather than requested and negotiated one accommodation at a time. There is also no homework, ever, which removes one of the most common evening flashpoints for families.

What do certified teachers actually do at Novatio?

Novatio is not a program where students log in and work through an online curriculum alone. Certified teachers provide direct guidance, academic support, personalized intervention and progress monitoring throughout the school day. When a student becomes stuck, a teacher is available to help. AI works behind the scenes to build and adjust each student's academic plan using real-time assessment data, identifying where a student needs more practice and where they are ready to move ahead, but teachers remain at the center of the experience. As one Novatio family put it, 'This is NOT an AI school, this is a school that applies features of AI to customized learning for each child.' Students also have access to Novatio's Special Education Support Program, which can include executive-function coaching, organizational support, targeted academic support and review of an existing IEP or 504 plan.

What does real academic progress look like at Novatio?

NWEA MAP data from Novatio's first cohort showed that students learned 4.6 times faster than expected during the measured period. Individual results vary, and that figure reflects cohort-level growth rather than a guarantee for every student. For a more specific example, one Novatio student moved from the 8th to the 80th percentile in reading over one year, based on NWEA MAP scores. That is one student's experience, not a typical result, but it illustrates what becomes possible when a student's academic plan is matched to their actual level rather than their age-based grade. For students with ADHD who have accumulated gaps in one subject while staying ahead in another, that kind of subject-level personalization matters. A student can receive support in reading without being held back in math, or move ahead in math without waiting for the class to catch up.

What happens in the afternoon at Novatio?

After core academics, students participate in live afternoon clubs. Each session runs approximately nine to eleven weeks and focuses on a practical skill, a real challenge and a project or measurable outcome. Past clubs have included a financial literacy simulation, a coding and game-design project built in Scratch, a global-issues debate club inspired by Model UN, and a well-being curriculum adapted from Yale's Science of Well-Being course. Students participate in two clubs per session. The afternoon structure gives students something purposeful to look forward to after academics and builds skills in areas like goal setting, critical thinking and creative problem-solving. As one Novatio parent shared, 'The teachers and administration feel like part of our extended family, and best of all, the friendships made at school are organic and natural.' You can learn more about how Novatio structures learning across the full school day on the curriculum page.

How does TEFA funding work for Novatio in Texas?

Novatio's Texas tuition is $8,500 per school year. For students who receive a TEFA award from the Texas Education Agency, TEFA can cover that tuition in full. Novatio accepts students without academic entry requirements, meaning ADHD, learning gaps or a difficult school history will not disqualify your child from enrolling. Texas families must separately qualify for and receive a TEFA award. Novatio does not control TEFA approval, and not every Texas family who applies for TEFA will receive an award. If your child has an existing IEP or 504 plan, documentation of that plan may be relevant to the TEFA process; use current official Texas rules or speak directly with TEA for guidance on funding priority and award amounts. Once a TEFA award is in place, families select Novatio through the TEFA portal and complete Novatio's enrollment requirements.

How do you find out if Novatio is the right fit?

The best first step is a direct conversation. Novatio's admissions team can walk you through how the school day works for a student with ADHD, what support services are available, how the TEFA process connects to enrollment and what documentation you may need. There are no academic entry requirements to apply, and the application takes under two minutes with no commitment and no application fee. If you want to talk through your child's specific situation before applying, book a 1:1 call with Karissa to get your questions answered directly.
