What is Novatio and is it available to Houston families?

Novatio is a Cognia-accredited virtual private school serving students in grades 2 through 8. Because the school is fully virtual, Houston families enroll from home and attend on Central Time without any commute or campus requirement. Students complete approximately two hours of focused, personalized core academics each morning, then join live afternoon clubs built around real projects and practical skills. Certified teachers are present throughout the school day to guide students, answer questions, and step in when a student gets stuck.

How does Texas TEFA help Houston families pay for Novatio?

Novatio's tuition for Texas students is $8,500 per school year. Texas families who receive a TEFA award can use those funds to cover that tuition in full. TEFA is a state funding program, and approval is separate from Novatio's admissions process. Novatio accepts students without academic entry requirements, but Houston families must separately apply for and receive a TEFA award. After receiving an award, families select Novatio through the TEFA portal and complete Novatio's enrollment requirements. Novatio does not control TEFA approval, and not every applicant receives an award.

What does a typical school day look like for a Houston student?

Students follow a shared academic schedule, but the work within each subject is personalized to their current level. During the math block, for example, one student might be strengthening multiplication skills while another is working on pre-algebra. All five core subjects, which are English, Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science, are covered in the morning. Novatio is designed so that academics are done by lunch. There is no homework, ever. Afternoons open up for live clubs where students work toward a real project, a measurable challenge, or a published creation alongside peers and a teacher-coach.

How does personalization actually work for my child?

AI works behind the scenes to build each student's academic plan using real-time assessment data. It places students at the level they are ready for, identifies skills that need more practice, and adjusts the learning path as the student progresses. A student can be at one level in math and a different level in reading at the same time, because placement is by subject, not by a single grade label. This matters especially for students who are strong in one area and still building in another. Certified teachers provide the direct support, intervention, and human guidance that technology alone cannot replace. Students are not left alone with a screen.

What evidence is there that this model actually works?

NWEA MAP data from Novatio's first cohort showed that students learned 4.6 times faster than expected during the measured period. Individual results vary, and no outcome is guaranteed, but the data gives families a concrete reference point for what the model has produced. One Novatio student moved from the 8th to the 80th percentile in reading over one year, based on NWEA MAP scores. That is one student's experience, not an average, but it illustrates what is possible when a student receives accurate placement and consistent support. Novatio is Cognia-accredited, which means the school meets recognized standards for educational quality and program review.

What if my child has a learning difference or an IEP?

Novatio supports students with a range of learning differences, including dyslexia, ADHD, and autism, through its Special Education Support Program. Many supports are built into the daily learning model rather than added only after a student begins to struggle. Depending on a student's learning plan, those supports can include individual pacing by subject, extended time, frequent breaks, text-to-speech, academic-coach support, and one-on-one specialist-led intervention. Additional support services carry an additional cost. For students with an IEP or 504, those additional costs are covered by the state. Families are encouraged to book an admissions call to discuss their child's specific situation, documentation, and program fit before enrolling.

How do Houston families get started with Novatio?

The application takes under two minutes, requires no commitment, and has no application fee. Because Novatio has no academic entry requirements, all applicants are accepted into the school. Texas families who plan to use TEFA funding will need to complete the TEFA application process separately through the state portal. Enrollment timing, TEFA application windows, and award amounts are time-sensitive, so connecting with someone early gives your family the best picture of next steps. You can start an application or book a 1:1 call with Karissa at meetings.hubspot.com/karissa-ham/novatio-admissions to talk through whether Novatio is the right fit for your Houston student. If you'd like to understand more about how the Novatio curriculum works before applying, that's a good place to start.
